WELCOME

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! This is an exciting time for your child, although he/she may experience some butterflies about going to “big” school.  I find that the start of kindergarten brings mixed emotions for parents as well. Joy and sadness seem to be combined in one as you celebrate the growth of your child into a little girl or boy, and grieve the loss of your “baby”. Let me assure you, if you are a first time kindergarten parent, that this is a remarkable and adventuresome year for your child. Kindergarten is unique in that it is here that youngsters develop a love of learning. Self confidence grows as your child is encouraged to explore, experiment, and attempt new things. New and lasting friendships are formed. Though it is in kindergarten that many foundations for academic success are laid, you will marvel at the transformation your child exhibits in all areas of his or her being…emotional, social, and physical.  This will be an AMAZING year!

Next, let me introduce myself. My name is Vicki Drew. I have taught mostly kindergarten for approximately 20 years, mainly at Edna Libby School! Kindergarten, and primary education, in general, has remained a passion of mine because of the uniqueness of children at this age. Their love of life most times is contagious. The innocence with which this age grouping approaches life is refreshing, and sometimes, funny. I have always wanted to write a book of all the wonderful things I've heard kids say! I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Maine in 1985, and last January decided to go back to school and pursue a graduate degree. This summer, I completed my third term from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. In March 2009, I will receive a Masters in Education degree with a concentration in brain research! I am very excited about that. My program details the latest research that implicates how people best learn, and what must be in place in order for maximum learning to occur. I look forward to using best practices this year in my classroom. I am presently not married with children, but have been blessed with many “adopted” children over the years, through active involvement with children and youth ministries. I love to travel and work abroad ministering to those in need. Here in the states, I enjoy time with friends and family, exercise, and reading.

Please review the “Welcome to Kindergarten” booklet, the Edna Libby Handbook, and the “Busy Bee Basics” handout. You will learn so much about school procedures, the kindergarten program, and our classroom in particular. I look forward to partnering with you this year, with the goal of equipping your student for a lifetime of joyful learning!

If you have any questions or concerns, you may call me at school (207-642-2500) or email me by using the link below.

Sincerely,
Ms. Victoria Drew
