    Take a trip back through time and across thousands of miles to the world of the Middle Ages.  Enjoy your trip, but have a pen and paper at hand to take notes as you experience life in a different time and place.  Be prepared to learn about the people, history, geography, and culture of this fascinating period of European history.
 


 

By the end of this activity, you will be able to:

 1. Define the term Middle Ages

 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the culture of the Middle Ages

 3. Identify the sequence of major events, structure of society, and people during this time

 4. Demonstrate understanding of turning points in medieval ages and the influence of the past

 5. Recognize and use specific vocabulary related to this period

 6. Create a piece of writing according to a rubric, which reflects understanding of key concepts

 7. Use the on-line card catalog to find a resource by subject or keyword

 8. Use a search engine to find relevant sites related to this period

 9. Find, copy, and paste five graphics from the internet to use in a word processed document

 10. Show your notes, sites, materials, and ideas collected throughout the tutorial

Project Description

Medieval Tour Learning Log

As you travel through the Middle Ages, keepnotes in your folder so that youíll be able to complete your acrostic poems and presentations.  You will also hand in your KWL chart, your notes, your poem and your reflections of the activity.  If youíre ready to step back to a world of castles, kings and knights, carry on...

1.  Read the background information on the Middle Ages in the folder at the circulation desk and write a one-sentence summary of the information to put in your working folder. 

2.  Visit History for Kids and follow the links entitled Middle Ages (the last picture).   Click on History with Timeline and read that paragraph.  Click on the Blue link for A.D. and define this term.  Check out 3 links from this site.  Write a a brief summary of your findings (6-8 sentences).  Be sure to include 3 major events related to the time period and look for facts to use in your poem.
 
 

3.  Visit  Life in the Middle Ages  and find a graphic youíd like to use.  Click on the picture, hold down until you see a list of options, and select ìCopy imageî.  Open Appleworks under the apple in the top left corner of the computer.  Click on ì Newî and select "Word processing", "Drawing", or "Painting".  A new document will open up for you.  Place your cursor on this new page and under Edit, select ìPasteî.  Now you may move or change your graphic.  Save your graphics to this page until you are ready to use them.  Find four more throughout the rest of this activity to use on your poem.


  

4.  Check out Famous People of the Middle Ages and read about three of the people there.  Write one or two sentences about each one in your notes.  Don't forget to be on the lookout for interesting words for your poem!!!

 
 

5. Visit  Medieval Clothing and read about typical dress of both the common people and the holy order.  Using this description, draw and color a picture of either type of person in their typical clothing.  Pay attention to details!!!

6.  Consult the Glossary of Terms and search for the word "mausoleum",  Define and illustrate it in your folder.  Now use the glossary to complete one line of your acrostic poem.  Be sure to show the reader what this term means by the way that you use it in your poem.

7.  Take a virtual tour by clicking on the screen to get to a choice of four tour guides. Choose one of the tour guides available to guide you around the site and introduce you to medieval life.  Visit at least three links from this page, and summarize your experience on the tour.  What did you learn about daily life, culture, etc.?  Use a new term in your acrostic poem.
 
 

8.  Visit Ghosts in the Castle and take a tour with your tour guide, a tiny mouse!  Stop in a room of your choice and illustrate and label the part of the castle. What did you see in the Great Hall? What game was being played in the Golar?

9.  Now...use a search engine of your choice from the BEMS Resources and search for your own interesting facts about medieval life.  Please find and write about food, recreation, medicine, and the different societal groups-peasants, holy order, and knights.

10.  Now use our District Card Catalog and find three books related to this period and write the title, author, and Call number in your notes.

And now...use the notes you've collected in your working folder to create your acrostic poem--Use the rubric and demonstrate your learning!!!  Be ready to share!!!
