After reading the novel Because of Winn Dixie together in class, the fifth graders in Mrs. Gloria Stevens' class at Frank Jewett School decided to do something to "help others who were less fortunate." Every student brought to school dog food, cat food, kitty litter, animal treats, or money to buy pet supplies such as pine shavings, rabbit pellets, or small animal toys. One student and his family even made a cat-scratching post to donate! Mrs. Stevens called the Buxton Dispatch and found that all animals from the Buxton area in need of a warm shelter are taken to the Westbrook facility. The students wanted to help out animals from their community. All together over $150.00 worth of materials from the students were donated to the Westbrook Animal Shelter just because of Winn Dixie (the dog in the novel)! |

The Frank Jewett-Hanson School Garden Club was overwhelmed with rainy weather last spring. The season ended with several things left unfinished.Because of the rain and warm weather these gardens grew and flourished. And so did the weeds!!!
The garden club, under the direction of Ilse Burns, held a special meeting this fall to tidy up the garden, so everyone can enjoy the flowers! The Jewett-Hanson Garden Club wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr Don Gnecco, Principal, and Linda MacLean, Speech Therapist at Buxton schools, for their help in weeding and pruning. The garden club also thanks their sponsors for their continuing support: Snells Family Farm, Buxton Garden Club, and Meservey's.
