Famous Book Character Visits Hollis School
For Read Across America Day which celebrates Dr Seuss's birthday, the Hollis School had many visitors who read to the students. The most famous visitor that day read to the third grade students in Rachel Wandell’s classroom. She was Sal, a character in her fathers award winning book.
Blueberries for Sal is a popular book by Caldecott medal-winning author Robert McCloskey. The book deals with Little Sal, who is going blueberry picking with her mother. She accidentally swaps mothers with Little Bear, who is blueberry picking at the exact same time. Sal also appears in McCloskey's One Morning in Maine. Sal and Sal's mother are modeled after McCloskey's wife, Margaret, and daughter, Sarah. Blueberries for Sal won the Caldecott Honor citation.
The story takes place on Scott Island, Maine were the family spent summers. Sal McCloskey told the students: “I am a separate person from the character in the book.” She answered the many questions that the class had and showed them on Google Earth where in Maine the story had taken place.
