Hollis Ed Tech receives recycling Award
Suzanne Brewer, Ed Tech from Hollis Elementary is this year's town winner of the annual eco-Excellence Awards which was is given in recognition of any "green" activity, rather than for recycling activities alone. Each one of the 34 communities served by ecomaine has a municipal award winner.
Diane Gagne, Principal of Hollis School nominated Suzanne for her recycling efforts at the school. Brewer said: "I basically am the liaison at the school, so recycling questions or concerns funnel through me and I helped to organize the nuts and bolts of recycling paper at the school. I'm kind of like the cheerleader or ringleader for recycling! I also have communicated with people in the school district about recycling issues." ecomaine highlights people's recycling and environmental efforts in the communities that ecomaine serves through this yearly award.

Getting Hooked on Sun Safety
The Hollis Gifted And Talented Educational Services (GATES) students are collecting data with their UV (ultraviolet) reader. They are determining what levels of sun exposure are safe. UV light is found in sunlight. As an ionizing radiation it can cause chemical reactions, and causes many substances to glow or fluoresce. People are aware of the effects of UV through the painful condition of sunburn, but the UV spectrum has many other effects, both beneficial and damaging, on human health.
This project is part of the Sun Safety Grant received by Principal Diane Gagne and Teacher Ilse Burns last year.

Hollis Students Jump Rope for Heart
The American Heart Association is a National non profit organization dedicated to funding medical research for Heart Disease. They work in conjunction with The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Together they developed a program called "Jump Rope for Heart." This is a fund raising event that children take part in nationally to raise money for research.
Brian Sullivan, Teacher Physical Education Hollis School says, "This is a win-win event. Children learn that jumping rope is a great way to become physically fit while supporting the Heart Association and raising money for research. This has been close to a year in planning this event at Hollis School. I first met the Rep. for the Heart Association at last June's Maine Wellness Conference. We were able to put this event together with the help of the Administration here at Bonny Eagle. The best part of all this hard work is getting the children excited about exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. This has had a huge impact on everybody here at Hollis School on so many levels."
