In light of the horrific events of September 11, 2001, students and staff of H. B. Emery Jr Memorial School were anxious to support the American Red Cross in their relief and recovery efforts in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. On Friday, September 28, they combined efforts to create a very unique, American flag to express their love and support in a patriotic way.
Donations would allow each person to buy a star or be a part of the "hand print" red stipes. Each student's handprint became a part of this flag. The end product was beautiful.
Mrs. Callanan has a friend who works for the Coast Guard in New York City. She contacted him and he agreed to carry the flag to New York for us and display it throughout the city, as well as being on board the Coast Guard Cutter and patrol boats that protect New York's harbor area. What an honor it was for the students to hear that their flag would actually be displayed for the relief workers and other New Yorkers to see.
Students and staff will be able to view a slide presentation of photos sent back to H.B. Emery by Mrs. Callanans friend in the coast guard at an assembly in their school.
A check was also sent to the American Red Cross in the amount of $603.00.

Our letter from New
York City: H.B. Emery, Jr. Memorial School Dear Students and Faculty, We were pleased to receive and display your American flag that helped raise money in support of the September 11 disaster. My crew and I are very proud of the children that took time to fabricate, and think about the people and military involved in keeping our great nation safe. Please find enclosed a collection of pictures showing the flag displayed throughout the New York harbor. You will see Coast Guard patrol boats. Port Security Units, rescue workers, and the media. Coast Guard men and women from every state were here to protect and offer assistance to the area during this time. The "Flag" is now displayed at Coast Guard Aids To Navigation Team New York, located four miles from the World Trade Center. Again, we thank you for your donation to support these people in need. A.D. GRAY |
