H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School student named a winner in Literary Contest

Caroline George, a fifth grade student at H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School in Limington, was named as Maine's second place winner for Level I (grades 4 to 6) in the 2008 Letters about Literature contest. This is a national reading and writing promotion program organized by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and the Maine Humanities Council in the state of Maine. The contest format involves choosing a book that has been important to a student, and writing a letter to its author. Over 60,000 entries were received across the country in three different age levels. Caroline wrote a letter to Sook Nyul Choi after reading The Year of Impossible Goodbyes, a book about a family's experience in North Korea in the Korean War. Caroline described how reading this book enabled her to connect with her grandfather and learn his stories from Viet Nam. Caroline received a certificate recognizing her achievement and a bookstore gift card. Caroline also entered this contest in 2007, and was named first place winner for Level I in the state of Maine.

The H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School in Limington had an assembly to give away the donations of food items that the students, grades kindergarten through grade 5 had brought in to the school. Tammy Pike from the Limington Congregational Church Food Pantry accepted the collected donations.
The students hoped to collect 300 hundred items and were surprised they had 360 items of food for the donation. The collection drive began after the Thanksgiving break. Teacher Gerry Gould organized the drive. Fifth grade students in Allison Burnell's class helped with the food drive.

The math and reading support staff at HB Emery School dressed up as a "fact family" for Halloween. They went into the cafeteria during lunch and let the kids move them around to form many and varied number sentences using 10, 2, and 12. The "plus" sign shirt has a "minus" sign on her back.

The Sounds of Africa At H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School

Students at H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School in Limington have been studying rhythm and patterns in the arts of the African culture. Africa has many diverse people, cultures, languages, regions and climates. These are reflected in the various artistic expressions of the arts. The students worked with Music Teacher Susan Knight and performed a concert for the rest of the elementary school.
The fourth and fifth grade students used genuine African drums and other instruments of rhythm in the performance. The music department purchased these African instruments with a grant from the Narragansett Number One Foundation.
