yellow dot Standish Students Learn about Fire Safety

Standish students learned about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week. Students at the George E. Jack School observed fire safety week by attending a class with local firefighters and getting a tour of fire trucks.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 blaze that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

This year's theme is "Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat." That's the message of this year's Fire Prevention Week (FPW). From October 8-14, firefighters spread the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home and teaching families and kids how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place. The Standish firefighters also talked to the students about not returning to a burning building to save pets or toys.

yellow dot Standish Students Celebrate Maine Heritage

Students in Gayle Carpenter's class at G.E. Jack School in Standish recently read The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare. It is a story of the adventures and challenges of a young boy as he struggles to survive as one of the first settlers in the Maine wilderness.
In 1768, a 12 year old boy named Matt was faced with making the biggest decision of his lifetime. His father had left him in the Maine wilderness to take care of the family homestead and had not returned as promised. During the father's absence, a nearby Native American tribe befriended and helped Matt survive. Matt helped teach one tribe member, Attean, how to read.
One of the projects the students at G.E. Jack did was to design a bulletin board showing many of the things that they read about in the story. They made log cabins, teepees, birch bark canoes, and depicted the different seasons in the Maine wilderness.
