Citizenship Award!

Edna Libby Elementary School in Standish has created an awards program for students who take action to help others. The first to receive the "Citizenship Award" are Third Graders James and Tyler. Principal Ginny Day and Third Grade Teacher, Robin Hulit nominated the boys as they both agreed to sit with a young student every day so that their bus ride became a positive experience. Students who are nominated for this award receive a red Edna Libby Lions T-Shirt. This will be an ongoing program and anyone can nominate a student for this award. Congratulations James and Tyler!!

Edna Libby School Celebrates Black History Month

Oscar Mokeme, Founder and Executive Director of the Museum of African Culture visited Edna Libby Elementary School in Standish to help the students better understand diversity and the African Culture. Mr. Mokeme brought with him an array of masks and discussed their ritual significance, their symbolism, and how they are essential to spiritual and cultural life. Mr. Mokeme, along with Modoy Fall, taught the third grade students how to play African drums. They explained that playing the drums can be peaceful and healing and wanted the children to experience this for themselves. Mr. Mokeme's lively personality made this presentation not only educational but exciting as well. The students had a wonderful time learning about the customs and beliefs of the African Culture. To learn more about the Museum of African Culture, visit their website at www.africantribalartmuseum.org.
