Project Citizen Showcase at Bonny Eagle Middle School
The sixth grade students of Clan MacNab at Bonny Eagle Middle School invited parents and friends to a Project Citizen Showcase. In this 8-week service-learning unit, teams of students research public policy issues and propose solutions that address the underlying problems.
This year’s issues included: animal abuse, healthy school lunch, energy, teen smoking, hunger, drinking and driving, school zone speed limits, littering on the Saco River, composting, healthy drinking water, and school recess.
The showcase is an open house in which community members are invited to drop in to view student displays and portfolios and to talk with student experts about their research and proposals. Community members also had a chance to evaluate the portfolios and oral hearings.
Reviewing the presentations were panel members: Buxton town clerk, John Myers; Standish rep. Mike Shaw; Standish selectman Terry Christy; School board member Joe Hanley; and State Senator Bill Diamond. Not panel members but also evaluating the portfolios were Maine social studies teacher mentor, Glenn Nerbak and MSAD 6 Curriculum Director Pat Hayden.
The two groups that will represent Bonny Eagle Middle School at the state project showcase are the Composting Group and the Unhealthy School Lunch Group. The state show case will take place May 15, 2009 at the statehouse. The Composting Group includes students: John Burnham Corey Roussel Shannon O'Clair Alexis Lambert Zack Gryskwicz, and Amanda Carter. Unhealthy School Lunch: Jessica Ray, Sam Rothwell, Taylor Sellner, Rachel Fuller, Jared Campbell, and Dylan Colby.
The students thank the panel members for taking the time to evaluate their projects.
