Greenhouse at BEMS
Bonny Eagle Grows

The students in the intensive needs special education classrooms at the middle school are in the process of working in their new business the Bonny Eagle Seed Company for the Bonny Eagle Community in conjunction with the new passive solar greenhouse. The students have been busily working at designing and creating the seed packages and beginning to measure and package the Organic Fedco Seeds. The operation of the Bonny Eagle Seed Company changes the environment of our classroom from a passive to an active, hands on learning experience. This project enables our students to transfer the skills learned in the classroom to the real world. The sense of pride that the students feel is immeasurable. The student's are selling beans, corn, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, spinach, beets, nasturtiums, sunflowers, basil and dill. If you would like more information on the seed project or you would like to purchase seeds and support our program please call BEMS at 929-3833 or send us email

Josh's Courage
Honor Flag
Our own, Josh Conley was just an ordinary kid who went to an ordinary school...
That was three years ago. For two and a half years he has fought a great battle against cancer, and he has finally emerged victorious. Now Josh is a cancer survivor, a national star, and my best friend. His life is his trophy, and he carries it with him with pride and gusto.
For as long as I've known him, Josh has always been a pillar of strength. He is courageous and strong, and is always up to a challenge. He is always ready to help, and ready to listen. He is funny, smart, and has always been kind to everyone.
If you see Josh in the hall today, you should give him a wave, or a high five, or just say hi. Whatever you do, you should show Josh how much you appreciate having him in our school. By V.D. (a good friend)
On May 21, the Bonny Eagle Middle School's Honor Flag was raised to recognize Josh's great courage in his battle!

Maine Association of School Libraries features Bonny Eagle Library
Bonny Eagle Middle School Library is the featured school library for May by the Maine Association of School Libraries. Their website at http://www.maslibraries.org/ featured photos of the BEMS library in May 2008.
Librarian Anne Farley, who is of Scottish descent said, "I got the idea that having a banner representing each of the 18 clans in our school, to hang in our library might be a fun thing to do. All of our 6th, 7th and 8th grades are divided into clans, such as Cunningham, Edinburgh, MacNab, to name a few. I acquired the fabric from Scotland, cut out and pasted the letters sewed them up." The library has flags for each clan.

Homework Hotline

Through the generosity of the Saco River Telephone Company, a "Homework Hotline" is available to Bonny Eagle Middle School teachers and parents. This system can be a wonderful communication tool. It is also very quick and easy to use. Teachers record daily homework assignments using their classroom phones, and parents can then check after regular school hours to see if their children have completed all the work assigned in class. To use the Homework Hotline, dial 929-9183 or 642-3408. When prompted you can enter the extension number for your child's class.
STIRLING CLAN IS EXTENSION NUMBER 140.

One Teacher, Mark Norton, has this to say about the system:
Clan Stirling has used the Homework Hotline for many years. Since 1994, the entire clan's homework for that night or weekend has been on the Hotline by 2:00pm. The kids do it! They look forward to it each day. There is homework, a "thought" of the day, or a quote.
Parents can keep track of their kids' work, what the assignment is and if it's getting done. When students are absent, this is a great way to stay up to date with the class. It has lots of possibilities! I've been very happy with it.
